25 Spring Cleaning Tasks Most Americans Forget (Free Printable Checklist)

TL;DR: Most spring cleaning lists cover the obvious — windows, baseboards, dusting. This one covers what people forget: dryer vent lint traps, dishwasher filters, ceiling fan blades, behind-the-fridge coils, mattress flipping, and HVAC vents. I do all 25 of these in my Columbus home every March, and they make a real difference in air quality and energy bills.

I love a fresh-start spring cleaning weekend. The first warm Saturday in March, I open every window, queue up an audiobook, and start at the top of the house working down. By Sunday night, the whole place smells like Mrs. Meyer’s basil cleaner and looks ten years younger.

But over the years, I’ve realized most spring cleaning checklists miss the stuff that actually matters — the hidden tasks that improve air quality, prevent appliance breakdowns, and save you money on bills. Here are 25 things I do every spring that most people forget.

Which appliances need spring deep cleaning?

Appliances quietly collect grime and gunk that hurts performance. Hit these annually:

1. Dryer vent (not just the lint trap). Pull the dryer out, disconnect the duct, and vacuum out the lint that builds up in the wall vent. A clogged dryer vent is the #1 home fire cause per the U.S. Fire Administration. I do this every March and Bailey usually supervises from the laundry room doorway.

2. Dishwasher filter. Unscrew the filter at the bottom of the dishwasher and rinse under hot water. Most people don’t know it exists. Mine had a year’s worth of food bits when I first cleaned it.

3. Refrigerator coils. Vacuum the coils on the back or bottom of your fridge. Dusty coils raise your electric bill by $5-$10 a month.

4. Washing machine drum. Run an empty hot cycle with 2 cups of white vinegar to kill mildew. Then wipe the gasket dry.

5. Range hood filter. Pop out the metal mesh filter and soak in hot soapy water. Stainless mesh filters can also go in the dishwasher.

6. Microwave interior. Microwave a bowl of water and lemon slices on high for 3 minutes, then wipe clean. See my natural microwave cleaning guide for the full method.

Which HVAC and air-quality tasks matter most?

These improve indoor air noticeably — especially if you have pets or kids with allergies.

7. Replace HVAC filter. If you haven’t in 3+ months, do it now. With Bailey shedding everywhere, I replace mine monthly during spring shedding season.

8. Vacuum vent covers. Pop off each register, vacuum the dust, and wipe the cover with a damp cloth.

9. Wipe ceiling fan blades. Slide an old pillowcase over each blade and pull off — it catches all the dust without spreading it everywhere.

10. Check carbon monoxide and smoke detectors. Replace batteries and test each unit. Most detectors expire after 7-10 years — check the manufacture date stamped on the back.

What bathroom tasks get skipped?

11. Run a vinegar cycle through the showerhead. Fill a sandwich bag with white vinegar and rubber-band it around the showerhead overnight. The next morning, the holes will run clear again.

12. Re-caulk the tub and sink. If caulk is yellow or peeling, strip it and re-caulk with mildew-resistant caulk ($7 at Home Depot).

13. Wash the shower curtain liner. Most plastic liners are machine-washable on cold with a towel for agitation.

14. Clean toilet tank. Pour 2 cups of vinegar in the tank, let sit 6 hours, then flush. Removes mineral buildup.

15. Replace toothbrush holders, soap dishes, and shower puffs. These collect bacteria fast.

What bedroom tasks should I add?

16. Flip and rotate your mattress. Two-sided mattresses get flipped. One-sided pillow-tops just rotate head-to-foot. Do this twice a year — spring and fall.

17. Wash pillows. Most polyester and down pillows can go in the washer on gentle. Two tennis balls in the dryer keep them fluffy.

18. Vacuum under and behind the bed. Dust bunnies, lost socks, and Bailey’s missing tennis balls.

19. Wash all curtains and blinds. Most fabric curtains are machine washable. Wipe blinds with a damp microfiber sock on each hand.

What kitchen and pantry tasks get forgotten?

20. Wipe down inside of kitchen cabinets. Take everything out, vacuum crumbs, and wipe with diluted dish soap.

21. Toss expired pantry items. Check spice expiration dates — most spices lose flavor after a year. Same with baking powder and baking soda.

22. Clean the garbage disposal. Drop in ice cubes and a half-cup of coarse salt, then run with cold water. Follows with lemon peels for fresh scent.

23. Reseason cast iron. Wipe with thin layer of vegetable oil, bake at 400°F for an hour. Mine looks brand new every spring.

What outdoor prep matters in spring?

24. Clean gutters. Winter debris and ice damage make spring the best gutter cleaning window. We hire ours done for $90 — worth every penny.

25. Wash exterior windows. Use a long-handled squeegee from Home Depot ($14) and a bucket of warm water with a splash of Dawn. Clean exterior glass once a year minimum.

Save this list, screenshot it, do one section per weekend. By April you’ll have a cleaner, safer, more efficient home.

FAQ — spring cleaning

When should I start spring cleaning?

Pick a warm Saturday in March when you can open windows. The fresh air helps you spot dust and lets cleaning fumes ventilate. Most of these 25 tasks can be split across two weekends if you don’t want to power through.

Do I really need to clean dryer vents annually?

Yes. The U.S. Fire Administration links nearly 3,000 home fires per year to clogged dryer vents. Lint also reduces dryer efficiency, raising drying times and your electric bill. A vacuum and brush kit ($24 at Home Depot) does the job in 20 minutes.

What’s the best HVAC filter to use?

MERV 8-11 strikes the best balance between airflow and dust capture. MERV 13+ filters more particles but can strain older HVAC systems. For pet households, I use MERV 11 monthly during shedding season.

How do I clean ceiling fan blades without making a mess?

Slide an old pillowcase over each blade like a sleeve, then pull off slowly. All the dust ends up inside the pillowcase instead of falling on your bed. Throw the pillowcase straight in the washer.

How often should mattresses be flipped?

Two-sided mattresses every 6 months (spring and fall). Pillow-top and memory foam mattresses just rotate head-to-foot — flipping them ruins the comfort layer. Always check the manufacturer’s tag.
