Best Robot Vacuum 2026 – iRobot Roomba vs Eufy vs Roborock (90-Day Test)

by Sarah Mitchell

TL;DR: After 90 days running all three in my Columbus home, the Roborock S8 MaxV Ultra ($1,599) is the best overall robot vacuum of 2026, the Eufy X10 Pro Omni ($799) is the best value, and the iRobot Roomba j7+ ($599) wins on pet obstacle avoidance. If you have hardwood and a dog, get the Eufy. If you have mixed flooring and want set-and-forget mopping, the Roborock is worth the extra $800.

I’ve owned three robot vacuums since 2020, all of them disappointing in different ways. My first Roomba couldn’t find its way back to the dock. My Eufy got stuck under the couch every single time. So when my friend Lisa offered to lend me her Roborock for a month, I figured I’d test the three current flagships side by side.

Lisa, my husband, and I ran these three robot vacuums for 90 days across our two homes (3,200 combined sq ft, 4 humans, 1 golden retriever, 2 cats). Here’s the honest verdict.

How I tested these robot vacuums

Each robot ran twice a week for 90 days. I tracked: time to map the house, mapping accuracy, pet hair pickup, obstacle avoidance (especially Bailey’s toys and rope chews), edge cleaning, app reliability, dock auto-empty function, and how often I had to physically rescue the robot.

Roborock S8 MaxV Ultra – the flagship that earns it

At $1,599, this is not a casual purchase. But it does things the others don’t: it vacuums AND mops in a single pass, the dock automatically washes and dries the mop pad, empties the dust bin, and refills the clean water tank. I went 30 days without touching the robot or dock except to refill the detergent.

Pros:

  • Best mopping performance of any robot I’ve tested
  • Reactive AI obstacle avoidance – never hit Bailey, never hit a sock
  • Dock self-cleans the mop pad with hot water
  • Mapping is photo-accurate; you can label rooms in the app

Cons:

  • $1,599 is real money
  • Dock is huge – takes up a 24″ x 16″ floor footprint
  • Detergent and filter consumables run about $80/year

Eufy X10 Pro Omni – the value pick that surprised me

At $799 (often $699 on sale), the Eufy X10 Pro Omni does 80% of what the Roborock does for half the price. It vacuums and mops, the dock auto-empties and auto-washes the mop pad, and the obstacle avoidance is genuinely good. The mop pressure isn’t as high as the Roborock’s spinning pads – dried-on stuff needs a manual pass.

iRobot Roomba j7+ – the obstacle avoidance king

The Roomba j7+ at $599 is the budget flagship, and its specific superpower is pet obstacle avoidance. iRobot literally guarantees in writing they’ll replace it if it runs over pet poop. Bailey’s chew toys, charging cables, kid backpacks – the j7+ navigates around all of them better than the Eufy.

The catch: it doesn’t mop. If you have hard floors and want one robot to do both, this isn’t it. If you have mostly carpet, the j7+ is excellent.

What about cheaper robot vacuums under $300?

I tested two cheap ones (Eufy 11S and Roborock Q5) as a baseline. They work, but you give up: app control, no mapping (random pattern cleaning), no auto-empty, no obstacle avoidance. You’ll spend more time managing the robot than the time it saves you.

If your budget is strictly $300, get the Eufy RoboVac 11S ($179). It’s a basic suck-and-bump robot that works fine on hardwood. Don’t expect smart features.

Maintenance costs you should know about

  • Roborock S8 MaxV: $80/year (filters, mop pads, detergent)
  • Eufy X10 Pro Omni: $60/year (filters, mop pads)
  • Roomba j7+: $90/year (filters, brushes, bags – bags are the killer)

Which robot vacuum should you buy?

Pet owners with mixed floors: Eufy X10 Pro Omni. Best overall value.

People who hate housework and have budget: Roborock S8 MaxV Ultra. Set and forget.

Carpet-heavy homes with pets: Roomba j7+. Best obstacle avoidance, no mopping.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are robot vacuums worth it for pet owners?

Yes, if you commit to daily runs. A robot running every day picks up hair before it embeds in the carpet. The trick is daily, not weekly. Pet hair compounds fast.

Do robot vacuums work on thick carpet?

Modern flagships (Roborock, Eufy X10) handle low to medium pile carpet fine. Shag and very thick wool rugs can stall older models. For shag, plan on running a corded vacuum monthly.

How long do robot vacuum batteries last?

Most last 3-5 years before noticeable degradation. Replacement batteries are $40-80 depending on brand. Lithium batteries lose about 20% capacity per year of daily use.

Can robot vacuums replace a regular vacuum entirely?

For 90% of homes, yes – for daily maintenance. You’ll still want a corded vacuum for monthly deep cleaning, stairs, upholstery, and getting under furniture the robot can’t reach.
