How to Repaint Kitchen Cabinets Without Sanding (DIY Step-by-Step)

TL;DR: You CAN repaint kitchen cabinets without sanding if you use a bonding primer (Zinsser BIN or INSL-X Cabinet Coat) and a self-leveling enamel topcoat (Benjamin Moore Advance). Total cost for a 12-cabinet kitchen: $185 in supplies + 3 weekends of work. The trick is degreasing with TSP, deglossing with liquid sandpaper, and applying primer in thin coats. My mom’s 1990s oak cabinets look like new construction.

My mom’s kitchen had 1990s honey-oak cabinets that screamed “20 years ago” the moment you walked in. She wanted a quote from a painter. Quote came back at $4,200. We did it ourselves in 3 weekends for $185, and 18 months later the paint is still flawless. No chips, no peeling, no yellow showing through.

Here’s the exact process. This is a real project, not a Pinterest fantasy.

Can you really paint cabinets without sanding?

Yes – with the right primer. Sanding’s job is to scuff the surface so paint can grip. Modern bonding primers (Zinsser BIN, INSL-X Cabinet Coat, Stix) chemically bond to slick surfaces and replace the need for sanding. They’re not optional. Using regular primer without sanding will fail in 6 months.

Step 1 – Remove all cabinet doors and hardware

Label EVERYTHING. I used painter’s tape with numbers (1, 2, 3…) on both the door and the cabinet frame so I knew which door went where. Take photos of the layout. Bag all hardware (hinges, knobs, screws) in labeled Ziplocs.

This takes about 2 hours for a 12-cabinet kitchen. Set up a paint station in the garage or basement with cardboard or sawhorses to lay doors flat while drying.

Step 2 – Deep clean with TSP

Kitchen cabinets are coated in cooking grease whether you see it or not. TSP (trisodium phosphate) is the only cleaner that cuts through cooking oil completely. Mix 1/4 cup TSP per gallon of warm water, wear gloves, scrub every surface with a sponge, rinse with clean water, let dry overnight.

Skip this and your paint will peel in 6 months. I’m serious.

Step 3 – Liquid sandpaper / deglosser

This is the “no sanding” hack. Liquid sandpaper (also called deglosser) chemically dulls the shiny surface so primer bonds. Wipe it on with a rag, let sit 10 minutes, wipe off. Done.

Important: it smells like nail polish remover. Run a fan, open windows, wear a mask. Don’t use near an open flame.

Step 4 – Apply Zinsser BIN primer (2 thin coats)

Shellac-based Zinsser BIN is the gold standard for cabinet primers. It blocks tannins from bleeding through (huge issue with oak), bonds to slick surfaces, and dries in 30 minutes. Smells terrible – definitely ventilate.

Apply with a 4″ foam mini-roller for flat surfaces, 2″ angled brush for grooves and edges. Two THIN coats are better than one thick coat. Let dry fully between coats (2 hours minimum).

Step 5 – Light scuff between primer and topcoat

The only “sanding” you’ll do: a very light pass with 220 grit sandpaper between the primer and the topcoat. Just enough to smooth any drips or bumps. Wipe with a tack cloth.

Step 6 – Apply Benjamin Moore Advance (2 coats)

Benjamin Moore Advance is a waterborne alkyd enamel – the holy grail for cabinets. It self-levels (no brush marks), cures rock-hard, and looks like factory-applied finish. It’s pricey at $65/gallon but you only need one gallon.

Color: We used “Simply White OC-117” – one of the best whites for kitchen cabinets. Other popular Advance colors: “Cloud White,” “Decorator’s White,” “White Dove.”

Apply 2 thin coats with the foam roller, cutting in edges with the angled brush. Let dry 16 hours between coats (it’s slow-drying which is what makes it self-level).

Step 7 – Let cure fully before reinstalling

Advance takes 30 DAYS to fully cure to its final hardness. You can reinstall doors after 72 hours, but be careful with them for the first month. No leaning anything against them, no dish racks bumping them. After 30 days they’re bulletproof.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Skipping TSP – grease = peeling. Don’t.
  • Using cheap rollers – foam rollers from Dollar Tree shed. Get Purdy or Wooster.
  • Painting thick coats – drips, brush marks, slow drying. Thin coats every time.
  • Using a regular paint instead of enamel – kitchen cabinets need durability that flat or eggshell paints can’t deliver.
  • Not waiting between coats – if you paint over not-fully-dry primer, you’ll get fish-eyes and craters.
  • Skipping the topcoat – primer alone is not durable enough for kitchen cabinet wear.

How long does this last?

Properly done, painted cabinets last 7-10 years before they need touching up. High-traffic areas (around the dishwasher and sink) wear first. Keep a small jar of your topcoat for touchups.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to paint kitchen cabinets?

3 weekends for a typical 12-cabinet kitchen if you work efficiently. Weekend 1: remove, clean, prime. Weekend 2: second prime coat + first topcoat. Weekend 3: second topcoat + reinstall. Total active work: about 25 hours.

Can I paint cabinets without removing the doors?

Technically yes, results are mediocre. Doors painted while hanging have drip marks, uneven coverage, and look amateur. The 2 extra hours to remove and label doors is worth it for a 10x better result.

Will painted cabinets chip?

Properly painted with bonding primer + cabinet enamel, NO. The chips you see in DIY cabinet jobs come from skipping the bonding primer or using interior wall paint instead of cabinet enamel. Follow the system above and chips are extremely rare.

What’s the best paint color for kitchen cabinets?

The most timeless choice is Benjamin Moore “Simply White” or “White Dove.” For something darker, “Hale Navy” and “Kendall Charcoal” are popular. Avoid trendy colors (sage, blush) that will look dated in 5 years.
