How to Clean a Front-Load Washer & Eliminate Mildew Smell for Good

TL;DR: Front-load washers smell because water sits in the rubber gasket and detergent drawer. To fix it: wipe the gasket weekly with vinegar, run a monthly Affresh tablet cycle on the hottest setting, leave the door cracked open between loads, and use HE detergent at HALF the recommended dose. That’s it. The smell will be gone in two weeks.

For three years, my Whirlpool front-loader smelled like a wet basement. I’d open the door to load laundry and physically recoil. I tried everything – bleach cycles, baking soda, leaving the door open – and nothing worked. Then I finally figured out I was doing two things wrong: using way too much detergent and ignoring the gasket.

Here’s the routine that fixed it for good, plus the products that actually work.

Why does my front-load washer smell like mildew?

Three reasons: water gets trapped behind the rubber door gasket, the detergent drawer accumulates soap scum, and the drum doesn’t dry between loads because the door is sealed shut. Add HE detergent overdose (which most of us do), and you’re basically growing a science experiment.

HE washers use 80% less water than top loaders, so any detergent residue doesn’t rinse out. That residue feeds bacteria, which produces that wet-dog, sour-towel smell.

The weekly 5-minute gasket wipe

This is the single most impactful thing you can do. Every Sunday when I’m doing the towels, I pull back the rubber gasket (the seal around the door opening), wipe inside the folds with a microfiber cloth dipped in white vinegar, and pull out whatever gross stuff has accumulated. The first time I did this, I found a sock from 2024.

  1. Pull the rubber gasket back gently with your fingers
  2. Spray distilled white vinegar inside the folds
  3. Wipe with a microfiber cloth – rotate the cloth as you go
  4. Dry the gasket with a fresh towel
  5. Leave the door open for 2+ hours after

The monthly Affresh deep clean

Once a month I run an Affresh tablet on the hottest cycle. Affresh ($14.99 for 6 at Target) is just dissolvable bleach in tablet form, but it works better than dumping liquid bleach because it dissolves slowly throughout the cycle.

OxiClean Washing Machine Cleaner ($9.99 for 4 packets) is the cheaper alternative and works almost as well. I rotate between the two.

Don’t forget the detergent drawer

Most front loaders have a pull-out detergent drawer. Mine slides out completely if I pull it past the click. Once a month I take it to the sink, scrub it with an old toothbrush and Dawn dish soap, and let it air dry overnight. The black gunk that comes out is unreal.

While the drawer is out, take that same toothbrush and scrub the cavity where the drawer lives. There’s usually mold growing on the underside of the dispenser opening that you’d never see.

How to prevent the smell from coming back

Prevention is 90% of the battle. Here’s my permanent routine:

  • Use HALF the recommended detergent. Tide PODS especially – one pod is enough for a full load, not the two the box recommends. More soap = more residue.
  • Leave the door cracked open between loads. Not wide open (Bailey likes to crawl in), but cracked enough for air flow.
  • Pull the detergent drawer out an inch when you’re done. Same airflow principle.
  • Remove wet laundry immediately. I set a phone timer if I’m running a load before bed.
  • Run a “freshen” cycle weekly – hottest setting, empty, just water and vinegar.

What about the filter? (Most people miss this)

Front-load washers have a small filter at the bottom front, behind a kick panel. Every 3-6 months, you should drain and clean it. I didn’t know mine existed until year two. When I finally opened it, I pulled out two coins, a hair tie, a baby sock, and a quart of black sludge.

Your owner’s manual will show you where it is. Put a shallow pan under it (water will gush out), unscrew the cap, pull out the debris, rinse, and screw it back in. This alone can stop a phantom smell that nothing else fixes.

When the smell still won’t go away

If you’ve done all of the above for 30 days and it still smells, the problem is usually deeper in the machine – either the drain hose or the pump. At that point I’d call a service tech. For my friend Lisa, hers turned out to be a clogged drain hose that had standing water sitting in a low spot.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I clean a front-load washer?

Wipe the gasket weekly, run a cleaning cycle monthly, clean the drawer monthly, and clean the pump filter every 3-6 months. If you have pets or do heavy soil loads, bump everything up by 50%.

Can I use bleach instead of Affresh?

Yes – 1 cup of bleach on the hottest empty cycle works fine. The reason I prefer Affresh is it’s gentler on the rubber seals over time. Bleach can dry them out and cause cracks after a few years.

Is it bad to leave the washer door open?

No, it’s actually recommended. The door needs airflow to dry the drum and gasket. The only reason not to is if you have small kids or pets who climb in – in that case, crack it 2 inches and use a magnet to hold it.

Will vinegar damage my washer?

Distilled white vinegar in moderation (1 cup monthly) is fine. Don’t use it weekly with bleach in alternating loads – the combination can degrade rubber over years. Vinegar for the gasket wipe is perfectly safe.
